The Great Indian Murder
"The Great Indian Murder" is a riveting Native American thriller about the genealogy of a toxic family and its impact on the entire social hierarchy. When power is abused, the creation of a kingdom has disastrous consequences for all who are involved. Vikas Swarup's book is a harrowing celebration that takes a bold look at the explicit exploitation of indigenous people and confirms why certain laws exist. The inhabitants of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands are a protected population, subject to strict regulations that ensure they, their environment and their way of life are protected at all costs. Suffice it to say that nothing is learned, and the creative freedoms that are used just make it seem disgusting.
Director Tigmanshu Dhulia experiments with the way a story can be explored with extremely poor dialogues, where the characters give half of themselves for the role they are given. Vicky introduces us to Shabnam Saxena, an aspiring actress who is humiliated by him when she refuses to have sexual contact with Vicky's Nigerian government agent. He finds two underage Naxal women to sleep with and finds that he now has to appease a drunken Nigerian government official. The next morning, the two women are found dead, having bled profusely. Vicky tries to salvage the situation by sending the bodies out of the estate for disposal when the car is stopped by the police in Naka Bandi. Vicky's world is turned upside down when the bodies are discovered.
After Vicky's imprisonment, Vicky's father, Jagannath Rai (portrayed by Ashutosh Rana), tries everything to get his son out of gaol. In the process, he distributes a considerable amount of money to various investigative agencies so that Vicky's involvement is forgotten. Sudha Bharadwaj (portrayed by Richa Chadha) of the Delhi Police is one of the officers in charge of the investigation and also accepts some of the bribe money. Vicky decides to throw a party to celebrate his comeback three years after his arrest. Most of the invited guests are a mixture of known and unknown acquaintances. Vicky is well aware of this, but he does everything he can to maintain his reputation. As he is about to cut his cake, fireworks erupt and Vicky is hit by a bullet in the chest, providing perfect cover for the killer.
Sudha Bharadwaj, an officer of the Delhi Police, and her assistant Manjot Singh put their responsibilities first when they are assigned to investigate the murder of Vicky Rai along with Suraj Yadav (portrayed by Pratik Gandhi) of the CBI. Suraj is the stooge of the Chhattisgarh minister, and while trying to clear Vicky Rai's name, Suraj, Sudha and Manjot come up with three possibilities. One of the main suspects is Iketi, a native of the Andaman Islands whose main goal is to find his idol Ingetayi, who was kidnapped by an explorer visiting the island. Main suspect number two is Munna, a petty thief who comes across a large bag of cash, which causes him a lot of problems. Mohan Kumar, a handyman with multiple personality disorder, is prime suspect number three, adding an uncomfortable and perhaps frightening drama to the story. An anonymous blogger follows the case closely to give his readers an unbiased assessment of the developments in the case. After tapping the phones of those involved in the investigation, he learns crucial information that puts his life in danger.
