Breathe
"Breathe" is a 2017 Indian biographical drama film directed by Andy Serkis and written by William Nicholson. The movie tells the inspiring true story of Robin Cavendish (played by Andrew Garfield), a young British man who is diagnosed with polio in the late 1950s and given only a few months to live. Despite this grim prognosis, Robin and his devoted wife Diana (played by Claire Foy) refuse to give up hope and instead choose to live life to the fullest.
The film begins with Robin, a successful and adventurous young man, meeting and falling in love with Diana at a cricket match. They get married and soon after, while living in Kenya, Robin contracts polio and is left paralyzed from the neck down. He is told that he will need to spend the rest of his life on a hospital bed, dependent on a mechanical respirator to breathe.
Determined to live a full life, Robin and Diana refuse to accept this fate and instead decide to bring Robin home and raise their son, with the help of friends and family. They work with inventor Teddy Hall (played by Hugh Bonneville) to create a mobile respirator that will allow Robin to move around and travel. With this device, Robin is able to explore the world and have new experiences, including a trip to Spain and a visit to a German clinic where he is treated by a pioneering doctor.
As Robin's condition worsens, he begins to experience respiratory failure and is rushed to the hospital several times. During one of these stays, Robin becomes depressed and asks his friend Colin (played by Ed Speleers) to help him end his life. Diana is devastated by this request but ultimately decides to support her husband's wishes.
In the film's emotional climax, Robin is able to leave the hospital and return home, where he is surrounded by his family and friends. He spends his final days surrounded by love and joy, breathing with the help of the mobile respirator and living life on his own terms.
Overall, "Breathe" is a touching and inspiring story of love, courage, and perseverance in the face of adversity. It highlights the importance of living life to the fullest, even in the face of significant challenges, and the power of human connection and support in times of need.
